I try to avoid the early conclusion that your concept of "a peaceful world " is one of equilibrium . A world of dynamic union where everything is connected to everything else. A situation where the self must be extinguished or totally sublimated. A mature concept that I can accept . However, To achieve that goal all sense of self must disappear . This proposition is then in conflict with the ideas of Christianity and Islam . If anything certain Eastern Beliefs are in better accord with the idea that virtue is it`s own reward . Where promises and threats are not so clumsily presented as an inducement as a reward and punishment dynamic. This distinction illustrates cultural and maturity differences between East and West . Neither of the former two religions disassociate themselves from the pathologically disturbed God presented in their Holy Texts . In essence a warrior God . One tailored to the times when nomadic tribespeople lived in their petty world of squabbles and internecine relationships . Hopefully we have evolved into a world of enlightenment . Although fundamentalist forces on both sides could frustrate this goal .
You ask why the adventurous test the limits implying some analogy with personal fulfillment in a spiritual search . I would argue there is no proper analogy . Human spirit of endeavour ,even if at times seeming perverse to others, is but a feature of natural selection and is hard-wired into some driven people . There is no fundamental personal gain involved for those people . Unlike the simple bribery of religion with it`s reward/threat dynamic .
You stress the " personal revelation " aspect of religion . This cannot be seriously debated as the idea hints at subliminal persuasion that cannot be shared . Perhaps where our subconscious mind , in given circumstances, overwhelms our conscious rational mind . I don`t wish to clip an angel`s wings but some would argue at hidden persuaders(subliminal messages) being at play when we enter the supermarket door . Even with a limited shopping list in our hand .
