One last valedictory to Mark Lilla and it is a tribute to his scathing honesty when reflecting upon his adolescence for all to see (read) . When he presents himself as an obnoxious evangelising prat - I quote
"All teenagers are dogmatists ( okay, we can forgive him that broad generalistion in his brief period of self disapproval) - a teenager with a Bible is simply a more intense teenager"
He goes on to say - " Not long after I was " saved " with a permanent "Property of Jesus " sign emblazoned (on my person) . I wore a large leather cross around my neck ( a little like those TV 1 News Presenter`s crucifixes who vied with each other until presumably Bill Ralston intervened and brought the competition closer to earth) I prowled school halls with a leatherbound Scofield Reference Bible under my arm seeking VICTIMS ( my emphasis) . I even took on teachers , whose skepticism struck me as a sign of spiritual degeneracy . I dis-armed them with a little scripture . Skewered them with the sharpened tip of my logical modus ponens . Shaking their foundations and preparing them for salvation .
I was doing them a favour ! ( I own that exclamation as well) ".
UNQUOTE - Was he unique or but a grotesque caricature ? My experience from close encounters is that he was somewhat stereotypical .
