If the mansions Jesus spoke of were allegorical (John 14:2), the relationship he spoke of was not. He continues (v. 3):
"And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
That is the whole crystal clear point. There are no limits on the places available to those who will receive Jesus as Lord and Saviour. The 144000 mentioned in Revelation have a particular role to fulfill, but never does the book suggest that salvation is limited to them. As the ranks of the main proponents of the idea - the Jehovah's Witnesses - swelled, and the world failed to end according to their scheduling and rescheduling, they had to soften their adherence to that error.
